Aura Ltd have successfully been awarded the contract to refurbish the exterior No 72 Eccleston Street ( Locally known as the Flat iron) as Principal Contractor.
Working closely with Smith.Young Architecture Ltd – Liverpool.
This will be our 3rd Property in the same street in the Historic, Prescot village.
Prescot Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) is a five-year project to repair, restore and re-use historic buildings and spaces in Prescot town centre. Prescot is one of the oldest settlements in Merseyside and the project is drawing on this diverse heritage to
help shape the town’s future.The THI will restore shopfronts, historic architectural features, repair historic buildings and improve open spaces, including the medieval Market Place. It aims to make Prescot town centre more attractive and vibrant, working with existing businesses, attracting new businesses and creating new homes.
The initiative is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Knowsley Council and other local partners. It will see around £4 million invested in bringing Prescot’s heritage back to life.
As part of the THI, Aura Conservation Ltd were employed to carry out repair and restoration works to the roof and shop front at number 46 Eccleston Street, with some additional internal work. The roof was stripped, and rotten timbers replaced. New
insulation, felt and battens were installed, before re-slating in the existing slates. Approximately 20% of the slates were replaced with reclaimed slates to match the original. New lead flashings were also installed.The rear elevation was raked out and re-pointed in a lime mortar and two new lintels were installed to high level windows. All windows were replaced, including the shop front and risers. Internally, wiring was replaced, and the flooring was replaced with engineered oak flooring.
The shop front was re-decorated, and the shop sign replaced. A new awning was installed, and external cast iron gates fitted to the entrance, all making the shop front more in keeping with how it would have originally looked.

Descaling of stone cills: remove all loose, friable material bristle and/ or phosphor bronze brushes. Hand rub exposed stonework faces with carborundum blocks to produce the smoothest reasonable finish to blend with surrounding stonework. Following cleaning of the brickwork, including painted over cills, lintels and window jambs, using the DOFF method.

The latest phase of work we have started on this exciting scheme is at number 72. Locally known as ‘The Flatiron Building’ as the structure is very similar to ‘The Flatiron Building’ in New York and is one of the tallest buildings in the city: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatiron_Building.
Our works involve refurbishment of the façade – including doff cleaning of the whole building, stone repairs/replacement, replacement of the whole slate roof and refurbishment of existing sash windows. Works are 4 weeks in, with the scaffold up and work well under way.
Client is exploring possibilities to install a working ‘Timeball’ signalling device which will be a major attraction.
