Project Spotlight – Bank Hall, Bretherton

Bank Hall is a Grade 2* listed building and was the Manorial home of the Bannister (Banastre) family whose ancestors came from Normandy with William The Conqueror. The Friends of Bank Hall (formerly Bank Hall Action Group) have worked tirelessly since 1995 to save the Hall which had become derelict. With the help of Heritage Trust for the North West & Lottery funding, this has now been achieved with the restoration of the Hall being started in July 2017.

Located at Bretherton in Lancashire and hidden away in woodland adjacent to the A59, the Hall was completed in 1608, was remodelled in the 1830’s by George Anthony Legh-Keck, the then owner of the Hall and it then became a mixture of Jacobean and Georgian Gothic in style. Unique in Lancashire, this beautiful building had to be saved.

Aura were appointed to complete all the replication and re carving of stonework following the collapse of the building, the house centre piece is the Ram, when the building collapsed the Ram was completely destroyed leading to the commission of a new carved Ram from a solid singular piece of stone.
