Tools of the Trade – Repointing

Repointing is the process of renewing the pointing, which is the external part of the mortar joints in masonry construction.

Quite often, repointing is included in our projects; over time weathering and decay cause voids in the joints between masonry units, usually in bricks, allowing the undesirable entrance of water.

Water entering through these voids can cause significant damage through frost weathering (that’ll be doing some damage in the North of England right now!) and from salt dissolution and deposition.

Process:

  • Mortar analysis – This is undertaken in order to make recommendations for replacement mortar that is both physically and aesthetically compatible with the building.
  • Test panels – A test panel will be carried out in a designated area, agreed on site by the client.
  • Cutting out – Rake out by hand and mechanical tools to open up joints and beds of stonework within the areas, scheduled to a depth of not more than twice the face width of the joint. Brush out loose matter and wet well with clean water prior to repointing.
  • Replacing – The pointing will be carried out to a neat masons finish (flush), in order to match up with the original, as close as possible.

Thus, accomplishing what we set out to achieve; refreshed pointing!
